Yes, Elizabeth was unusual for her time. But considering Austen wrote about the era she lived in then clearly some women were, including herself. Austen's sense of the ridiculous and her poking fun at society is wonderful.

I'm reading RITA books (have 3 to go) so haven't participated here at all. It's been some time since I've read P&P, but I recall him as being haughty and very condescending at first. It was partly the times, I suppose, but also his nature.
